Meet the Team - Alvin Manansala

Introducing the people behind the scenes at DPS, the company bringing you the Disability Support Guide and Talking Disability, to help you get to know us a little better and give insight into what we do. Next up in our Q&A series is our Software Developer, Alvin Manansala.

How long have you been with DPS?

I started with DPS in November 2019, so about 17 months now.

What is your role?

My role is Software Developer at DPS. I started my career as a Web Developer, where I was creating websites using wordpress. I then got interested in making web applications, so I transitioned into creating those.

Why did you join DPS?

I was interested in working at DPS because they utilised a lot of the same technology and systems I have studied and used in my previous work. I was also interested because DPS uses AWS (Amazon Web Services) for hosting their infrastructure. I saw this job as an opportunity to learn more about it and to grow my skills.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the competitive profiles on the Aged Care Guide website. For example, if you are viewing a profile under the nursing home category, it will fetch other profiles in the same category that fit your needs.

What are some of the things you’ve learnt in this role at DPS?

I have learnt a lot since I started here, I learnt how to use Docker containers (software) and the AWS system, which was an area I wanted to develop further.

What is your greatest achievement?

DPS has supported me to build my Software Developer skill set. Most importantly they encouraged me and supported me to become certified in AWS, and I am happy to say I passed the exam!

What is the best thing about working for DPS?

I really love working here because of the people, they are so friendly and sociable. It is really nice to have a work/life balance. On Fridays, my coworkers go around inviting everyone to catch up for a drink, so it makes the office a really nice place to work.

Now for some lighthearted questions, which team member would you most like to be stuck on a desert island with and why?

It would have to be either Will or Trudy. Will is so handy and I would have the best chance of surviving if I was with him. His camping and survival experience would be crucial! And Trudy is really entertaining and chatty, she definitely wouldn't allow me to get bored.

What would your perfect room look like?

My perfect room would include a massive gaming computer, plus a mini library. I love reading, including novels and self improvement books.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?

I visited Sagada in the Philippines, it is a province in the mountains. The weather is very chilly there but it has so much amazing scenery. My fiance invited me to go there with her. We went to a local tourist spot to do spelunking (caving), which is one of my greatest fears! When we got there, the cave was so slippery, I had to climb down by slipping down the rocks. But other people didn't seem to be having as many issues as I was, they were just walking down so casually. I would really love to visit other areas with mountains, places that have rest houses on the top of the mountain.
