A partnership between Minda and the Mount Gambier Pioneers is helping people with intellectual disability build friendships, confidence and belonging through basketball.

For people living with an intellectual disability across South Australia’s Limestone Coast, basketball is opening doors to new experiences, friendships and a greater sense of belonging.

Minda – South Australia’s largest and most experienced intellectual disability service provider – has partnered with the Mount Gambier Pioneers to help make these opportunities more accessible and inclusive, bringing people together through a shared love of sport.

For people accessing Minda’s disability support and NDIS services, the partnership has created meaningful ways for people to build connections and truly feel part of their community.

The Pioneers, who compete in the men’s and women’s NBL1 South competitions, have been a cornerstone of the Limestone Coast community since 1988.

Minda Regional Manager Limestone Coast Adam Creek said the partnership has been a natural fit, with both organisations sharing a strong commitment to inclusion.

“With crowds of more than 1,000 people at home games, the Pioneers have enabled us to better connect with the Mount Gambier community and share more about Minda’s disability support services for people living with an intellectual disability,” Mr Creek said.

More importantly, the partnership is already making a difference, with people supported by Minda enjoying the chance to attend games and feel included.

“Home games provide a welcoming and accessible environment where people can enjoy the atmosphere alongside their support workers and feel part of something bigger,” Mr Creek said.

As a direct result of the partnership, Minda now supports Tyne with Community Supports services.

This has enabled her to continue volunteering with the club and contributing to the game-day experience she loves with the support of Minda services.

A dedicated Pioneers fan, Tyne sells raffle tickets, chats with players and hands out customised lolly bags at training sessions. Her involvement has made her a valued part of the club while building her confidence, independence and connection with the local community.

“Through her involvement with the Pioneers, Tyne has built friendships, confidence and a strong sense of purpose,” Mr Creek said.

Pioneers Basketball Club President Tom Kosch said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to creating a more inclusive and connected community through sport.

“This partnership is built on shared values of inclusion, opportunity and community. Together, we are creating an environment where everyone can belong, participate and thrive,” Mr Kosch said.

“Sport has a unique ability to bring people together, break down barriers and create meaningful connections, and this partnership is a strong example of that.”

Following the positive collaboration, Mr Creek said Minda will continue to explore opportunities to strengthen inclusion and community participation across the Limestone Coast.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together so far, and we’re excited to keep creating opportunities that enable people living with an intellectual disability to live full and meaningful lives through quality Disability Support and community participation,” he said.
