Big changes are coming to the way some NDIS providers operate and they could affect how you access support.
From July 2025, certain providers will be required to register with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission under new government reforms aimed at improving safety and accountability.
So, what does that mean for you as an NDIS participant? Here’s a simple explainer to help you prepare and protect your choice and control.
What’s changing?
Right now, if you self-manage or use a plan manager, you can choose both registered and unregistered providers. However, from mid-2025, some provider types will be legally required to register with the NDIS Commission, including:
These providers will have to meet national safety and quality standards, pass audits and follow stricter rules to stay in business.
Why is this happening?
These changes are part of the government’s response to the Disability Royal Commission. This aims to ensure that everyone providing NDIS supports meets the same standards, allowing participants to feel safer, more respected and better supported.
What does it mean for you?
If you currently work with unregistered providers in any of the affected categories, there may be changes ahead. Some may choose to register, while others may stop delivering NDIS-funded services.
This could impact:
- who you can choose;
- how much services cost; and
- how easily you can book support, especially through online platforms.
That doesn’t mean your support will stop overnight, but now’s a good time to plan.
How to get ready
- Ask your current providers what their plans are
Will they register? If not, what will that mean for you? - Know your rights
Registered providers must meet strict quality and safety benchmarks. Learn more about your rights on the NDIS Commission website. - Review your NDIS plan
Now is a great time to reflect on your goals and funding. Your LAC or support coordinator can help you make adjustments. - Stay in touch
Talk with your plan manager, service providers and the NDIS Commission. Clear communication can prevent confusion later. - Stay informed
